Agatha All Along: Quicksilver's Return, Explained (2)

The following contains spoilers for Agatha All Along, Episode 6, "Familiar by Thy Side," now streaming on Disney+.

The sixth episode of Marvel Studios' Agatha All Along featured an unexpected return from one WandaVision character. The episode, "Familiar by Thy Side," delved into the backstory of Teen, now revealed to be William Kaplan. He's also confirmed to be Billy Maximoff, the reincarnated son of Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch. When Billy first came into Agatha Harkness' life in the Disney+ series' premiere episode, their meeting was only seen through Agatha's altered perception, playing out in the form of a police drama as a result of Wanda's lingering spell. "Familiar by Thy Side" revealed how Billy came to learn Agatha's name and why he sought her out. An important piece of the puzzle was a former resident of Westview.

WandaVision was full of twists and surprises that delighted fans. One of the big ones was the return of Evan Peters, seemingly in the same role he had played in Fox's X-Men movies, Quicksilver. The initial reveal of Peters' Quicksilver in WandaVision shocked and confused fans, as the MCU had previously introduced its own Quicksilver, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson in Avengers: Age of Ultron. While fans initially wondered whether WandaVision was introducing Marvel's multiverse in a crossover with Fox's X-Men universe, the truth was revealed to be far more mundane. Peters was not, in fact, playing the real Quicksilver, but simply a resident of Westview whom Agatha forced to play the part of Pietro Maximoff.

Agatha All Along Finally Introduces a Long Overdue Horror Element to the MCU

The fifth episode of Marvel Studios' Agatha All Along featured yet another trial on the Witches' Road and marked a magical first for the MCU.

"Familiar by Thy Side" revealed that Agatha All Along's mysterious Teen had been born William Kaplan. William then died in a car accident on the day that Wanda destroyed the Hex over Westview, as seen in WandaVision, leaving his body an empty vessel for Billy Maximoff. In the aftermath of the accident, William awoke, calling out for Tommy, Billy's brother. Exactly how Billy's possession of William's body worked is not yet clear. Billy's memories (of his own life and William's) appeared to be totally lost in his new form. This left him needing to piece together exactly what happened to him in the car accident and what it had to do with Westview.

Billy/William, still not knowing his true identity, started researching the Westview anomaly. Looking at videos of the Hex's destruction during the Battle of Westview online, he recognized the runes that Wanda cast in her fight with Agatha, dispelling the official cover story that Westview was an Avengers training exercise gone wrong. Billy also discovered that nobody from Westview spoke about what happened there. However, he was able to track down one former Westview resident who was willing to tell him the truth of the Hex. Billy, along with his boyfriend Eddie, went to meet this mystery Redditor in an parking garage. Here, Billy's contact was revealed to be none other than Ralph Bohner.

Ralph attempted to use a false name when he met Billy, but accidentally told Billy to "call me Ralph," before hastily correcting himself to "Randal." Ralph was looking notably more disheveled than when he last appeared on WandaVision and revealed he had fled Westview following his time under the control of both Wanda Maximoff and Agatha Harkness. Billy (who has maintained his telepathic abilities in his new body) was able to hear Ralph's thoughts as he silently begged Billy not to ask about Agatha. It was from these worried thoughts that Billy learned Agatha's name and, despite Ralph's fears, he asked him about Agatha. Ralph revealed that Agatha had forced him to poison Wanda's dog, Sparky, and manipulate Wanda's children. This was how Billy learned Wanda had children, setting him up to remember his own real identity.

What Kind of Magic Does Agatha Have?

Kathryn Hahn's Agatha Harkness has returned to the MCU in Agatha All Along. Agatha has lost her powers, but what kind of magic did this witch use?

When the WandaVision finale revealed the fake Pietro was, in fact, Ralph Bohner, a few Marvel fans were left disappointed. The return of Evan Peters as Quicksilver had raised hopes that he was playing the same version of the character who had appeared in Fox's X-Men movies, or was at least an altered version of the MCU's real Quicksilver. Instead, it turned out he was apparently nothing more than a comic relief with little relevance to the wider MCU, beyond serving as a puppet of Agatha Harkness.

Ralph's return on Agatha All Along, however, has both grounded him as a character, and has given him far more importance to Billy Maximoff's story. Ralph's Agatha All Along appearance served as a reminder of just how evil Agatha had been in her truly horrifying manipulation of him, while also setting Billy on course to walk the Witches' Road with Agatha. During their meeting, Billy asked Ralph whether he had gained the ability to do anything he couldn't do before, following his time in the Hex. Ralph was cagey, but responded as if he didn't know what Billy could be talking about.

In the comics, while Billy Maximoff was reborn as Billy Kaplan and became Wiccan, Tommy Maximoff was reincarnated as Tommy Shepherd and became the superhero Speed.

This vague response leaves the door open to the possibility that Ralph has maintained his super speed and could appear again as a speedster, now that the MCU is lacking a Quicksilver. Though, of course, Ralph's appearance also set up the return of another Marvel speedster: Tommy Maximoff. In the comics, while Billy Maximoff was reborn as Billy Kaplan and became Wiccan, Tommy Maximoff was reincarnated as Tommy Shepherd and became the superhero Speed. Following his conversation with Ralph, Billy has set out on the Witches' Road in hopes of being reunited with his lost brother, hinting that Speed could be coming to the MCU.
